Today’s trip begins with a drive along the Ruta de la Cenotes, where you’ll stop for a swim at the beautiful Sol y Luna cenote, before visiting a “jungle” spa for a sweat lodge and herbal bath experience. Next is a seafood lunch at a beachside restaurant, with time to enjoy the fabulous beach at Porto Morelos before ending the day in buzzing Playa del Carmen, where you’ll have dinner in an underground cavern.

The Ruta de la Cenotes is a 30-kilometre stretch of road, along which are over 20 cenotes that are open to the public. Most cenotes are on community-owned Maya land and are managed by the community, including this one.
Sol y Luna is a beautiful “open” cenote that can be accessed via some wooden steps; for the more adventurous, there’s the option to zipline into the water.

Hiding in the middle of the tropical jungle, this community-run outdoor spa offers a unique 2.5-hour package that includes a relaxing herbal bath, a clay scrub, and a massage, while listening to the birds chatter in the trees.
It’s not a five-star luxury establishment, but it is authentic, and it’s a wonderful way to experience the sights and sounds of the jungle; you may even be joined by some of the resident spider monkeys.
Note that the “temazcal” (a traditional Mayan steam room) is currently not part of the package due to COVID restrictions; instead, the massage will be longer.
The spa package needs to be booked in advance and paid in cash on arrival. Contact details: official website, +529981052016, or WhatsApp.

Sandwiched between glitzy Cancún and vibrant Playa del Carmen, the pretty village of Puerto Morelos has a much more laid-back atmosphere than its neighbours. Visiting today, it’s hard to imagine that this place was once a thriving port in the 19th century, exporting hundreds of tons of hardwoods from the jungle, as well as chicle (a natural chewing gum), across the Atlantic to Europe. Although these days its primary economic activity is tourism, it has managed to avoid the rapid growth trajectory of some of the other resorts and retains that “small-town” feel.
With the great Mesoamerican coral reef lying just 500 metres from the shore, it’s also a great place to eat fresh seafood, and this seafront restaurant serves some fantastic dishes. Try the oysters or octopus ceviche; they also do an impressive Bloody Mary, complete with crab claw!

The village’s “leaning lighthouse” once warned approaching ships of the coral reef, but a replacement lighthouse had to be constructed after this one was damaged by Hurricane Beulah in 1967 (which caused its tilt). Efforts to remove the structure from its current place proved fruitless, as the foundations were strong, and so it still stands, although now solely a tourist attraction, providing a focal point for photographs of the stunning white-sand beach that sits behind it. Also, check out the pelicans “guarding” the wooden pier, waiting for scraps from the local fishermen.
With its shallow, clear blue water, this is a delightful place for a post-lunch swim and some beach time. It’s a public beach, so just find a spot to lay down your towel, away from the fishing boats.
