Impressive Engineering Feats of the West: Hoover Dam and Route 66

Start early, pack your car with snacks, drinks, and good tunes, and hit the road. You are headed to Arizona!

Hoover Dam is an utterly impressive sight and the best way to see it is on a guided tour. Tickets are available in person on a first-come, first-served basis. At the car park, you can see the impressive overlook and then head to the visitor centre. The tour includes a 10-minute movie and one-hour guided tour of the platform. You'll never think of water – and the control of it – in the same way again!
The tour is available only to those eight years old or older and is not disabled-accessible.

The Powerhouse building is a great first stop on Route 66 in Kingman, Arizona. It holds the Kingman Visitor Center, the Powerhouse Route 66 Museum, and the Route 66 Electric Vehicle Museum, all inside a converted 1907 electrical plant. The information you’ll find inside will acquaint you with the past, present, and future of this storied road.

As kitschy as it is beloved, Mr. D'z Route 66 Diner is an iconic stop on Route 66. Grab a burger, sit in a pink or blue booth, try a homemade root beer float or onion rings, and enjoy the colourful decor of vintage Americana at this classic roadside diner. While you wait for your food, you'll enjoy walking around to see the juke boxes, gas pumps, photographs, and other memorabilia from a bygone era, before Interstate 40 replaced sections of the old Route 66 in 1985.

Heading north off I-40 towards Hackberry will take you onto the historic route of the Mother Road. Here you'll drive through vintage towns and peeling signs showcasing the memory of an era that is past, thanks to the new interstate, which bypasses the towns on the way. Stop at the Hackberry General Store and get out your camera to capture the cars, gas pumps, roadside signage, and murals of yesteryear.

This historic eatery and roadside attraction has been offering "cheeseburgers with cheese”, "dead chicken”, and other humourous menu items since 1953. Walk around the building to see its full glory and get yourself an ice cream (or some other delicious road food) for the drive. Dinner isn't for a little bit, so live it up!
