    Canal de la Robine

From Carcassonne we arrive in Narbonne. This city was once the name of an entire Roman province: Gallia Narbonesis. Narbonne was an important trading center during the High Middle Ages, but when another port was built nearby, it lost its role. Only thanks to the wine trade in the 19th century did Narbonne experience a boom.
You can stroll along both sides of the Robin Canal that divides the center.

    Cathédrale Saint-Just et Saint-Pasteur

The Cathedral of Saint-Just is built on the foundations of three previous buildings, the oldest of which dates back to the era of Constantine the Great.
The first stone of the present structure was laid in 1272 by Pope Clement IV, but by the mid-14th century only the chorus (an upper open gallery or balcony inside the church (usually at second floor level), where musicians, singers, organ are usually placed) and the central nave (an elongated room bounded on one or both longitudinal sides by a row of columns or columns separating it from neighboring naves) and the whole western part were unfinished.
Therefore the temple looks very unusual: 14 chapels frame a three-nave structure of enormous height, but on the western side a wall suddenly appears before the eyes of the visitor. From the outside St. Juste looks very much like a fortress, although the classical Gothic arches are quite sufficient.

    Cathédrale Saint-Nazaire de Béziers

Béziers went down in history as the site of the massacre of heretics during the Albigensian Wars.
In 1209, Catholic Crusader troops stormed the city demanding that the leaders of the Cathar movement be surrendered. It took a long time before the city was able to recover from the destruction and turmoil.
It took two centuries to rebuild Saint-Nazaire Cathedral.

    Canal du Midi

It is interesting to see the technical sights of the Midi Canal, which since 1861 connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea across the Garonne. In Béziers, the water flow is directed over a bridge over the Orb River.
On the southwestern side are the locks of the Fonserrand, a lock staircase of eight chambers.

    Plage de la Grande Conque

From the dark gray basalt of the lava flows the Romans built the settlement of Agate: it is sheltered by a promontory now called Cap d'Agde.
The old town on the cape neighbors the resort of Agde. Here you can do all kinds of water sports, as well as just swim.

    Mont Saint-Clair

The road over the narrow strip of beach separates Lake To from the sea and leads to Sete. The town of Mount Saint-Claire only emerged in the seventeenth century. Today its industrial area stretches amidst rich vineyards.
Sete is the largest fishing port in the South of France. The quarters near the old port retain a special atmosphere and flavor.
The poet Paul Valery is buried in the old maritime cemetery on Mount St. Clair. Like the chansonnier Georges Brassens, he was born in Sete.
