Voyage to the Lofoten Archipelago

After travelling through the harsh, but spectacular, landscape of Nordland, take time to discover how difficult it was to actually live in this wilderness. This crofter’s cottage museum in Kjelvik will allow you to appreciate the life of the people of Sami descent who populated this area.
Amazingly, this authentic croft was lived in up until 1967, with the rugged land being farmed by smallholders who tended their four cows, sheep, a couple of goats, and a horse.
Visitors to the croft museum also get the chance to try lefse, a Norwegian flatbread, with other traditional foods being available to buy.
The croft museum is only open during summer months, with the dates changing annually. For exact dates and times, check the website.

Park your car and prepare to visit the Tømmerneset rock carvings.

The Tømmerneset rock carvings are approximately 9000 years old and give a fascinating insight into the prehistoric peoples of Nordland. This ancient rock art includes two life-size reindeer figures, carved into the steep rock wall.

Return to your car and prepare to carry on with your scenic adventure.

Enjoy a well-deserved lunch at the restaurant of the Hamarøy Hotel, which specialises in using local ingredients.

Take the car ferry from Bognes to Lødingen.
The ferry timetable is seasonal, with ferries generally leaving Bognes every hour to two hours. The ferry journey takes approximately an hour.

Leave the ferry and prepare to discover the stunning Lofoten Islands.

Take a moment to stop and appreciate the beautiful little island of Holdøya, with its picturesque hamlet perched on its shore. See also the larger island of Hadseløya in the background, with its looming mountain.

Stretch your legs at the Austnesfjorden rest area and take the wooden walkway out onto this little headland, which borders the attractive Sildpollen Bay.

Arrive at your hotel, which will be your base for the next two nights, situated on the charming harbour of Svolvær.
While at the hotel, try its excellent restaurant, Paleo Arctic, with its menu inspired by the hunter-fisher-gatherers of the Paleolithic Period, who inhabited this beautiful archipelago.
