The town of Bastia was founded in 1378 by the Genoese governor Leonello Lomellini. There was already a port in existence, which became known as Terra Vecchia (The Old Town), and a new settlement was built, Terra Nova (New Town), now the Citadel. The Citadel and its ramparts were completed in 1480, and the Palace of the Governors in 1530. Both are lovely historic areas to wander around, with narrow streets and alleyways, and gorgeous sea views.
Starting from Saint Jean-Baptiste Church, with its two bell towers, you can follow the road along the seafront to the old port. From here, the road will lead you to Le Mantinum, an architectural space and walkway designed to link the port and the Citadel. At the end of the path, you can take an elevator to the belvedere, from where you will have a magnificent view of the town and the coastline. You will then be on the Citadel’s ramparts. Follow the pedestrianized road to the former Palace of the Governors, which is now home to the Bastia Museum, and then on to the 17th-century St. Mary’s Cathedral. Have a look at the giant solid silver statue of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary inside. This weighs almost half a ton and is traditionally carried in procession on August 15 during the celebration of the Holy Mary.
From here, the path leaves the ramparts and skirts around the south side of the town, with lovely mountain views. Continue walking until you get to Romieu Garden, from where you can walk down through its shady, tree-lined pathways and staircases back to the old port, and to the hotel.

This lagoon was formed over 6,000 years ago and stretches 11 km along the coast, covering 1,450 hectares. The lagoon is the largest wetland in Corsica and is recognised for its international importance as a waterfowl habitat. It was designated as a nature reserve in 1995 to protect the 250 species of birds that live there, as well as around 350 species of plants. The lagoon also has economic importance and produces over 100 tonnes of fish annually.
From the Ecomuseum, head south along the lakeshore to take a circular loop walk. As you stroll along, look out for herons, coots, flamingos, and also turtles along the drainage channels. It’s a very peaceful and beautiful place for a walk, and takes around an hour.
Please note that the Ecomuseum is closed from Saturday to Monday, but the trails are open 24 hours.

From here, you can rent SUPs, kayaks or canoes for paddling along the Tagnone; a small river (a tributary of the longer Tavignano river) which flows south through the town of Aleria into the sea. It’s a very picturesque route, with trees and reeds lining the banks, and a small turtle nesting beach along the way. It takes around 2 hours there and back.
